Alternative Medicine Takes Root in Roseville

The East/West Clinic in Roseville recently opened its doors to residents in the metro area. Unlike traditional medical offices, this clinic gives patients the option of care without the use of drugs or surgery. Here the techniques of Chinese medicine are practiced and used to help patients deal with pain and other medical problems.

Although the Roseville office is new, the first East/West Clinic was established over 14 years ago in White Bear Lake. Prior to studying alternative medicine, owner Colet Lahoz was a registered nurse for a number of years in hospital trauma and intensive care units. She also was the director of nursing at Children's Hospital in St. Paul.

She said her dissatisfaction with Western medical practices and her own health drove her to research other medical options for treating pain.

"l am allergic to most of the common drugs used to treat patients today," Lahoz said. "More often than not, I would have a bad reaction if someone gave me medication. In fact, when - I was 18 I had a severe reaction to aspirin and nearly died. I knew there had to be something else out there to help me."

What Lahoz discovered was the natural healing effects of her own body through the study of Chinese medical treatments like acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicines. She decided to help others who were also allergic to drugs and those who simply can not be helped by regular medical practices.

"Chinese medicine has taught me that there is more than one way to treat a problem," Lahoz said. "Each person is different. What works for one person may not necessarily be the same for another. Western medicine is just the opposite; trying to cure everyone with one solution.

"With Chinese medicine the entire body is treated, not just the problem,"
she added. "It speeds up the healing process, teaches preventive practices and leads to overall better health for clients."

For patients, this often means a lifestyle change is necessary including change in diet and exercise habits. It may also include learning regular relaxation techniques.

The cost of treatments at the clinics vary, according to Lahoz. Every visit includes an evaluation, treatment and care of the patient. Some insurance companies may pay for the services. Patients need to contact their own health care provider to find out.

Besides opening a second clinic, Lahoz tours the country promoting the benefits of alternative medicine several times a year. She also speaks to local groups and organizations including YMCAs and Lion's Club members.

Lahoz is also the author of a new book titled "Conquering Yeast infection: The Non-Drug Solution." In the book, she links a number of illnesses to a disease known as Candidiasis. This disease comes from the overgrowth of fungus in the lower intestines, which in turn affects the entire body. Lahoz believes that many people are needlessly suffering from that illness today and they don't even know it. She has encountered it in trying to help some of her patients.

In her book, she links the disease to such illnesses as chronic fatigue, depression, gassiness and even environmental illness. She said the book has been well received by the medical community and reviews are positive. The book can be ordered at bookstores across the country. The cost is $19.95.
